With an extensive network of over 7000 km of cycling paths, the fifth largest federal state is no longer a hidden gem. Asphalted cycle paths lead through fields, meadows, and forests or skirt the more than 3000 lakes. Long-distance cycling routes follow the rivers Oder-Neisse, Havel, Spree, and Elbe.
Some of these routes pass through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald and the Lower Oder Valley National Park. More than one-third of the state's area is protected nature. Some paths follow in the footsteps of the poet Fontane, who found inspiration for his writings during his walks through the landscapes of his homeland.
